Grace Kelly, and the Return of Hitchcock Barbies

Last year, Mattel released several celebrity dolls, including one of Grace Kelly as she appeared in TO CATCH A THIEF.

As much as I want to support Classic Film-related dolls (if we buy them, they'll make more of them! Especially Hitchcock dolls!), I was totally bored by Kelly's dull makeup and slicked-back hair...the frou-frouy blue dress was about the only big appeal, but for thirty-five bucks: a doll dress??! No thank you.

So I was hoping she would hit the clearance aisle. Then I could have the dress. Give Kelly a makeover, or sell her.

But then, to my total delight, Mattel just released this:

Glorious REAR WINDOW Grace Kelly!!

Ah...darker makeup, a killer hair-style, and another amazing dress!

Plus this doll's packaging (the background, anyway) is totally epic.

I'm a big disbeliever in NOT deboxing my dolls -- My God, they can't breathe in there! I opened one yesterday who had been under plastic for thirty-one years. Can you imagine?! I swear I heard her whisper, "Thank you!" -- but I think Grace Kelly REAR WINDOW is one doll I'd HAVE to leave in the box.

Besides, if I touched her, I might get that marshmallowy goodness of a dress dingy, and then I'd hate myself forever.

Comparison shot:

Because at least one other doll collector will come across this blog (I hope) wanting to see which Grace Kelly doll she should spring for! Unless she's a rich doll collector: then she'll buy both, AND splurge on the Silkstones.

Photographs by me, taken at Walmart -- because I'm NOT a rich doll collector. ;)

...

Hope you non-Doll people/Grace Kelly fans also enjoy!

wow 2 posts wihtin 24 hours huh? the blogosphere is starting to smell nice again :)

i must agree dear Ginger, the Rear Window Grace is much preferred, both in doll and real form! did you wear your red swimsuit to Walmart? :P

i am like you, when i buy a collectable i take it out of the box! (tho it took me a minute to decipher "big disbeliever in NOT deboxing" haha) i like to see the damn thing on my shelf! i didnt buy it for "investment" purposes, but i DO however keep the box and in fact have a huge stack of them placed strategically in the useless corner of space by my computer desk ;)

btw i like your new backdrop :)

I'm not a "doll" guy (unless they are of the living variety), but it is appropriate that "Rear Window" Grace is more fabulous than "To Catch a Thief" Grace. As in the movie world, so is it in the collectible doll world.

Rear Window Grace Kelly's background and dress are wonderful, but I don't think that face plus hair remind me as much of the actress than the other doll..

Artman: I felt the need for something other than fiction. Lest you all think I've gone completely crazy. ;)

I did not wear my swimsuit to Walmart. No. Ha. I wore a teal dress with high-heals. Fixed my hair nice. Perfume. Jewelry. The works.

Walked past some boys re-stocking shelves after Christmas, and got quite a long look from 'em.

And I did keep the boxes for a while, too, but decided, "I'm collecting dolls here, not cardboard," and tossed 'em.

Well, most of 'em. Keep a few for sentimental reasons.

And thank you. I like the new backdrop too...Harpo makes me happy. :)

M.D. Jackson: Good point.

Now if they would just make a Kim Novak from VERTIGO barbie, life would be complete. ;)

...

Eugen Gurjasti: I can see that, too.

In fact, someone over at Flickr took Rear Windows hairdo down, washing out the gel or whatever, and removed her dress...now she just looks like another beautiful Barbie, and not so much Grace Kelly.

But both are nice. Especially the dresses! :)
