Happy Boithday, Bobby Jordan!

Born April 1st, 1923, today is the special day of my favorite Dead End Kid!

Happy Birthday, Bobby Jordan!!

[Blows Bobby a kiss]

...

I had several things I wanted to post today -- a nine-page essay I wrote by hand during my recent blogging absence, a couple of drawings of Jordan, a DEK-inspired poem -- but since I haven't been online lately, I don't have the essay typed yet.

I could share the drawings and poem, I guess, but I'm feeling kinda shy.

Maybe I'll post 'em later...if I get brave, and get the chance. I do have a dentist appointment this morning: some way to spend Bobby's birthday! Lying on my back...though when I get home, I may just shower (wash away the germs from the dentist chair), crawl in the bed, lie on my back, and watch 'Angel' in DEAD END.

...

Here's hoping everyone has a great day!

-- And that I don't have any cavities. ;)

...

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart!!

I can’t figure that Dead End sound. Maybe because I was there twenty years later. We would say of Gorcey “he thinks who he is.” And we would say of the rest of that lot “not for nothin, but …” We didn’t do malaprops.

Bogart knew the sound but didn’t really use it until the forties. Cagney was and sounded like New York. Conte owned it. The best was Jimmy Cannon. He had New York right. Woody Allen has the best more recent ear for New York (limousine liberal and working class) but we are contemporaries.

I spent a good part of my life with cops but still can’t call the 13th precinct the “one-three” because I wasn’t one. Hearing New York is easy. Piece of cake – duck soup. Hollywood New York? Call somebody who cares. Or better yet, call somebody who knows.

I like your ear -- with a dash of Hammett, a sampling of Chandler, perhaps some Ard, and the world gone wrong of Cain. Fun. Matthew sent me – but don’t get mad at him.

It is so funny to see what people search on! Love your commentary on it!

Hi, Ginger. I'm Bobby Jordan's son, Richard Jordan. It is so great to find a tribute to Bobby Jordan on his birthdate. Your commentary was great.

I happened on your blog in tracing my roots.

Would be helpful to put "roots" in the subject line.
