Hollywood Dolls: An Introduction

The other night, while finishing up my Christmas shopping, I stumbled across a very strange, and very beautiful Hitchcock doll!

THE BIRDS Barbie Doll

Look, it's Tippi Hedren! I've always loved that green suit...

Now I've seen several Film-related Barbie dolls in my day, but never one as creative, 'dark', or as silly as this one. How fun!

More popular film-star Barbies include Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. There's Audrey as Holly Golightly from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, and as Eliza Doolittle from MY FAIR LADY; they also have Marlyn wearing her white dress from THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, and the pink dress from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES.

The two most popular movies for making dolls seem to be THE WIZARD OF OZ, and GONE WITH THE WIND. Mattel, of course, has their incarnations of each, but Barbie-maker Mattel's not the only brand out there...Popular doll-makers Madame Alexander and Tonner both have several GWTW and OZ dolls.

World Doll
has some of the more interesting GWTW dolls, including not one, but two, of my beloved Ashley! The other companies tend to ignore him, except Franklin Mint, who years ago made a porcelain doll of 'the sad eyed Ashley Wilkes'.

Speaking of Franklin Mint, they make the BEST Scarlett O'Hara doll I've ever seen! Their 16" vinyl Scarlett: it's absolutely beautiful, and more than any other Scarlett O'Hara doll -- including Tonner's popular Scarlett doll -- it actually looks like Vivien Leigh.*

See? Gorgeous!

For years, she's been my dream doll! Unfortunately, Franklin Mint's awful proud of her...

As for other films and stars:

A few years ago, I ran across Rick and Ilsa dolls from CASABLANCA. Wonderfully dressed in their trench coats and fedoras.

Two of my more recent favorites are the dolls of Fred and Ginger! And although they are modeled after their worst film together, THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY, both dolls are very attractive.

There's also a luminous Lana Turner doll, by Integrity.

Two different 'Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey' dolls -- one is totally bland, while the other one is perfect! Very fun, and well-detailed, but little, like the CASABLANCA dolls.

Effanbee has the most unique offering of Hollywood dolls I've seen, including Mae West, Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, and James Cagney!

And finally, check out Tonner's gorgeous Joan Crawford doll:

Wow...

I'm not a fan of Crawford, but even I want to play with that! :)

Great! Are there Wheeler & Woolsey dolls? Norma & Robert?

So cool!

Yeah, I'll push Jonas out of the way and make myself first in line for some Norma and Robert dolls.

Welcome back Ginger!

Being the perfect gentleman, I'll step back, with a somewhat forced smile on my face, silently reaching for the Colleen More doll.

Hah! Very neat post!I didn't even know they made dolls like these. The Tippi Hedren one from The Birds is quite cool, actually.

There's also one of Gene Tierney in her "Ghost & Mrs. Muir" get-up. I've seen a Susan Hayward doll, but it fails to capture her beauty and inner torment. ;)

Glad to have you back, Ginger!

Jonas: Who in the heck are 'Wheeler and Woolsey'? :)

...

Raquelle: Thank you! :)

dKoren: I know! I want to make those little birds peck holes into that lovely green suit. :)

If we ever want a Dana Andrews doll, I think any circa-1980s Ken will do. They had that same pretty-yet-manly-face/slightly-stiff-body/long-armed look going on. Perhaps I'll find one, and dress it up in a little trenchcoat, with a miniature bottle of scotch. ;)

C.K. Thank you! I'm so happy to have friends to welcome me back. :)

And I simply MUST find this Gene Tierney doll now! I did find one called the Gene doll, by Ashton-Drake, but it's not supposed to look like Tierney specifically, but just any 1940s Hollywood star. One looks a heck of a lot like Linda Darnell.

Ginger, stay tuned for Wheeler & Woolsey. They promised to stop by one of these days... :)

Have you seen Pushing Daisies? That's got a Hitchcock The Birds tribute in one of the episodes. So cool! I thought of you when I saw it.

I don't watch it, but I have seen a few minutes of it...it looked cute.

Was the girl dressed like Tippi Hedren: green suit and all? :)

I wish they'd make a whole line of Hitchcock dolls...Ingrid Bergman with a little plastic mug of poisoned coffee...that sort of thing. :)
